The Smashing Pumpkins - Greatest Hits - Rotten Apples
The Smashing Pumpkins' biggest-hits album, Rotten Apples, traces the band's evolution (or devolution, counting on your outlook about the band's radical sonic shift in the mid-'90s) enjoys its timely time to its status among the kings of alt rock. For fans of the Pumpkins' beginnings as a tripped-out indie/art rock act, Apples opens with some of the band's strongest material. "Siva" and "Rhinoceros" (enjoys Gish, the Pumpkin's primarily--and arguably best--album) seamlessly mixed daydream pop with noisy goth-rock as prime examples of the Pumpkins' timely '90s sound. Apples additionally showcases three stellar tracks ("Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Disarm") enjoys Siamese Dream, the Pumpkins' breakout album. This disc makes the band's mid-'90s directional swing obvious, though, starting with "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," the aggressive alt rock/alt metal concoction released on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Fans of songs like "Zero," "Tonight, Tonight," and "The Everlasting Gaze" will be happy to know that pretty much every cage-rattling hit made it to this disc, along side the previously unreleased daydream pop track "Real Love" and an untitled new track (that sounds tons like the Siamese Dream-period Pumpkins) to round out the mix. --Jennifer Maerz

Customer Review: This is a rather respectable biggest hits package

Rotten Apples is a pool of some of the best known songs that The Smashing Pumpkins issued throughout their ten year long career. The eighteen-song CD contains such landmark songs as "Rhinoceros" (the option-radio breakthrough enjoys 1991's Gish), "Disarm" (the band's primarily song to hit the CHR Top 40 on Radio & Records), and the MTV smash hit "Tonight, Tonight." Other highlights of the disc include soundtrack selections "Drown" and "Eye" (enjoys Singles and Lost Highway, respectively) and lesser known singles "Zero" and "The Everlasting Gaze." Also included are two previously unreleased songs: the band's previous single, "Untitled," and a track enjoys the infamous Machina II album, "Real Love." The pool is pretty straightforward, including the most obvious options enjoys the breakthrough Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness albums. It is interesting to note that radio edits of both "Rhinoceros" and "Drown" are included rather than the filled-length original versions. The most unusual selection would likely be "Landslide," a B-side to the "Disarm" single that was included on 1994's B-sides album Pisces Iscariot and accomplished significant radio airplay nationwide. Serious Smashing Pumpkins collectors will likely be disappointed that the original Sub-Pop version of "Tristessa" and the original Limited Potential Records version of "I Am One" are not included on this disc; one can only hope that sometime in the destiny the band will put out a boxed set that will include these gems.

To accompany their biggest hits album, a companion volume to Pisces Iscariot was created, entitled Judas 0. However, it should be noted that there are very significant differences between the two stock. With Pisces, the pool was primarily made up of previously released songs (only three of the fourteen selections were unreleased). Of the sixteen songs on Judas 0, only six were previously issued, and one of those doesn't technically qualify as a B-side (as it didn't appear on a single but rather on a promotional only EP that was made accessible with copies of the Machina album at select retailers). For the remaining ten songs, two come enjoys the Machina II album (technically released, but not through usual means) and the rest are outtakes enjoys the Adore and Machina album sessions.

"Lucky 13" is a heavy rock song enjoys the Machina II album, additionally heard as the bed music because the opening sequence on the band's video pool DVD. Billy's vocals are pushed into the surroundings, being suppressed at the back of the guitars and drums. "Slow Dawn" additionally comes enjoys Machina II, and seems like a slower version of "Try, Try, Try."

"Because You Are" is a rambling mess, vocally stuck on the title phrase because much of the song. Musically, it leans more toward the Machina album than it achieves Adore (it was recorded throughout the Adore sessions) which is probably as much a reason it was left off of Adore as the repetitiveness is. "My Mistake" is a piano-based track, typical of other Adore period material, and one of the highlights of this disc. "Sparrow" is an acoustic track in the style of "Bye June" and "Soothe" (the latter enjoys the "Disarm" single and Pisces Iscariot), but Billy's vocals seem to be uninspired on this track. Another highlight of the disc is the pseudo-automated track "Waiting," enjoys the Adore sessions. "Waiting" is one of the few songs on this disc that realistically has the strength to stand up with material that completed make the Pumpkins previous albums. While a rock-oriented version of "Saturnine" seemed on Machina II, it had previously been recorded throughout the Adore sessions in a more automated rendition. This version of the song seems too similar in style to "Ava Adore" to have accommodate successfully on the Adore album; not that it's a bad track, but the similarities in the production of the tracks make it challenging to separate the two.

"Rock On" is a cover of the Essex song enjoys 1974 which was previously covered (and taken to number one on the Hot 100) by soap actor Michael Damian in 1989. The challenging part of this track is the inclusion of bits and pieces of old Van Halen songs in the squash in the middle of the song ("Everybody Wants Some" and "The Cradle Will Rock"). These bits sense compelled into the track and don't seem to beef up whatever. Billy additionally seems to have trouble keeping his vocals in sync with the music in some spots, noticeably rushing to catch the music. "Winterlong" is a soft acoustic guitar and bass guitar driven song. A rather unusual arrangement (pushing the bass into the foreground with the acoustic guitar hidden in the surroundings) makes this track stand out as one more highlight. "Soot and Stars" is the previous Machina outtake, though it feels more like an Adore track. Musically, the concentrate is more on keyboards than most of the Machina material. Unfortunately, this is a song that holds tons of promise that functions unfilled because of the detail that it never progresses out of the basic keyboard structure. What seems like it should be an introduction to a more fleshed out structure, turns out to be the complete structure.

Overall, both discs are quite satisfying representations of the Smashing Pumpkins material, though both are missing notable tracks. As previously stated, the primarily disc really should have contained one of the timely singles the band released prior to signing with Caroline Records. Likewise, Judas 0 might have included a twosome of more of the songs that were really released as B-sides. However, the set that was released is highly respectable and a reasonable primer on the Smashing Pumpkins material.

Customer Review: One of best biggest hits yet

Smashing Pumpkins biggest hits is just that their hits enjoys every album. Only thing is I didn't obtain into them until songs like bullet with butterfly wings, and zero. Which are on here. Their is additionally their orginal version of Landside. Which everybody knows Dixie Chicks covered not so long ago. For me their are 9 songs I listen to over and over once more. It additionally have disarm which is the killer in me is the killer in you song. Buy this album if you like the band.
